Steven Mauk will present a free recital of flamboyant music for the saxophone on Sunday, September 14, at 4:00 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall at Ithaca College. Assisted by pianists Diane Birr and Josh Oxford, and guitarist Pablo Cohen, the program will feature flashy and exciting music for soprano and alto saxophones.
Included on the program are a work based on Irish Celtic melodies, "Jaropo Jam" for guitar and saxophone based on Venezuelan folk music, and Vadim Neselov's "San Felio," written with a modern, crossover style fusing pop and jazz.
Ithaca composers Dana Wilson and Nicholas Walker will also be represented on the program, and the recital will conclude with "Devil's Rag," a traditional ragtime tune with a demonically fast twist.
Mauk, a professor of music at Ithaca College, has presented numerous solo, chamber music, and concerto performances in such locales as England, Ireland, Scotland, Holland, Japan, Russia, Italy, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Croatia, and Canada, as well as countless cities in the U.S. Included in these have been three performances at Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, a concerto presentation at Alice Tully Hall, and four concerto performances with the United States Navy in Washington, D.C. Recently he presented master classes and concerto performances in St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia. He is a founding member of the Empire Saxophone Quartet and the saxophone and guitar duo Remeleixo.
