On September 18, at 12:15 p.m., Carolyn Straughan will lead an informal discussion, entitled "Interpreting Mad Sally," in conjunction with the exhibition, True Lies and Other Stories: Joy Adams and the Evolution of Mad Sally, currently on display in the Handwerker Gallery.

True Lies offers the viewer a chance to reconnect with "Mad Sally," the protagonist of Joy Adams' paintings, who first appeared in the Handwerker Gallery eight years ago. With her monumental depictions of Sally, Adams redefines the notion of the hero by presenting an outsider who transcends notions of gender and age. She also weaves truth and fantasy in these lushly painted canvases that are rich in tradition while simultaneously constructing contemporary narratives.

The Handwerker Gallery is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5:00 p.m. The gallery is closed on Tuesday. All gallery events are free and open to the public.
