A new piece by renowned Ithaca composer Karel Husa will be included on an upcoming recital by clarinetist Richard Faria on Saturday, September 27, at 8:15 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall at Ithaca College. Faria, an associate professor of music performance, will be joined by cellist Heidi Hoffman.
Karel Husa's "Three Studies for Solo Clarinet (2007)" was composed for the 60th Prague Spring International Music Competition in 2008 and dedicated to Professor Jiří Hlaváč for his 60th birthday. The three contrasting and virtuoso parts -- "Mountain Bird," "Poignant Song," and "Relentless Machine" -- progressively represent three different characteristics of playing: espressivo, legato, and staccato. Also on the program are works by Bermel, Weber, and D'Indy.
Richard Faria is a founding member of the new music group Ensemble X. He has performed with the National Repertory Orchestra, Aspen Music Festival, Syracuse Symphony, Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, Skaneateles Festival, Bang on a Can Festival, Mother Mallard; as a guest artist with the Sylvan Wind Quintet, Ithaca Wind Quintet, Ariadne String Quartet, Atlantic String Quartet, Guild Trio; as soloist with the Young Composer's Collective and the North West Symphony; and as artist-in-residence at the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music and the Garth Newel Music Center.
