Jeffrey Tangeman, assistant professor in the Department of Theatre Arts, is directing Carmen with Syracuse Opera and Redhouse Theatre. Performances begin Friday, November 14.

If you think you've seen Carmen in all her blazing persona, wait until you experience this intimate version of Bizet's famous opera by Peter Brook, the provocative English theater and film director.

Designed to intensify the psychological state of Carmen, Brook's adaptation (with Marius Constant and Jean-Claude Carrière) focuses solely on the four main characters: Carmen, Don Jose, Micaela, and Escamillo.

The New York Times called Brook's innovative version of Carmen a "raw, brutal tale of mutual self-destruction that's fueled by both lust and existential bloodlust -- and is as deadly for others as it is for themselves."

La Tragédie de Carmen stars the Syracuse Opera Resident Artists and will play at Redhouse November 14 and 15 at 8:00 p.m. and November 16 at 2:00 p.m. Doors open 30 minutes before each performance.

A "talk back" session will follow Sunday's matinee performance. Opening-night tickets include a preperformance dinner at Pascale Wine Bar and Restaurant. Tickets may be purchased by calling the box office at 315-476-7372.

This event is sponsored by Time Warner and New York State Council on the Arts in partnership with the Redhouse. The Redhouse is located at 411 Montgomery Street in Syracuse.
