Brian Scholten has been chosen as Ithaca College’s new registrar. He succeeds Chris Knauer, who departed during the summer to accept a position in North Carolina.

Scholten has more than 15 years of experience in student records and enrollment management, most recently as registrar at Fitchburg State College. He has also served as coordinator of records and registration at Quinsigamond Community College; associate registrar at the University of Oregon; assistant registrar for academic information and record systems at Bucknell University; and assistant registrar at Winthrop University. While at Fitchburg, he was honored with a leadership award from the Student Government Association.

“I am delighted to welcome Brian to Ithaca,” said Kathleen Rountree, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “I am confident that his extensive experience in student records will be of valuable service to all of the students who count on the work of the registrar’s office for critical functions such as registration and graduation clearance.”

The registrar provides leadership in the administration of all academic records for current and former students. This includes ensuring the integrity and security of records; overseeing the evaluation of transferable credits; maintaining and enhancing the online registration, degree audit, course scheduling and classroom assignment systems; and processing transcript requests.

“I am impressed by the strong sense of community at Ithaca College and attracted to the region because of its dynamic quality of life and progressive cultural environment,” said Scholten. “My goals include establishing effective communications with all constituencies and building upon the culture of student advocacy that already exists at the college. I can’t think of a better way to be successful than to help students be successful.”

Scholten holds an M.Ed. in student personnel services from the University of South Carolina, B.S. in business administration from Bryant College, and A.S. in business administration from Quinsigamond Community College.

He will begin his duties as registrar on January 5 and will be joined in Ithaca by his wife, Amy, and dog Nina.

Former associate registrar Lynette Hatch came out of retirement to serve as acting registrar following Knauer’s departure; current associate registrar Lorie Holmes VanDusen will now take over that role until Scholten’s arrival.
