David Turkon, assistant professor of anthropology, co-organized an invited session on HIV/AIDS in Africa (with Alex Rodlach of Creighton University) for the 107th annual meetings of the American Anthropological Association in San Francisco.

The session, "HIV/AIDS: Underscoring Needs for and Challenges to Collaboration," was also chaired by Professor Turkon. David's paper -- entitled "Challenges, Rewards, and Potentials: International Collaborative Research on HIV/AIDS" -- highlighted his efforts to establish a collaborative, community capacity-building intervention to prevent the spread of HIV and mitigate impacts of AIDS.

His efforts are in collaboration with researchers from the National University of Lesotho, the University of South Florida, and Catholic Relief Services, several of whom contributed to David's paper.

At the meetings David also received a certificate of award, "In Honor of Outstanding Service to African Studies and Anthropology," from the Association for Africanist Anthropology, for which he serves as program co-chair and chair of the Graduate Student Paper Prize Committee.
