Recyclemania Returns!

Contributed by Mark Darling on 01/21/09

Recyclemania is a friendly competition between hundreds of colleges and universities across the nation throughout North America. This year's competition runs January 24 to April 3.

During this 10-week period, participating schools compete in a variety of contests that compare our recycling rate, as well as the trash we generate, to other participating schools. Since all the recycling on campus is collected together, this contest is for every one of the members of the College community.Recyclemania is an opportunity to raise awareness about the amount of waste we generate. Last year we continued our slide from first place in New York state!

Our overall recycling rate was third in the state (out of 6 schools) and 23rd in the nation (out of 79 schools).

Our pounds of recycled material per person came in seventh in the state (out of 11 schools), and 48th in the nation (of 151 schools).

Our total waste produced per person earned us second in the state out of 7 schools, and 36th in the nation out of 87 schools.

This year, 38 colleges and universities are competing in New York State, including Empire 8 rivals St. John Fisher and RIT.

Check out www.recyclemaniacs.org for more on the contest rules.

Do you bit, recycle it!
Recycling is easy to do, and it conserves energy, reduces green house gas emissions and creates jobs. So, pitch it in the bin and help the planet breathe easier. All you have to do to participate is use the bins in your room or office to dispose of the following items:

In the blue bins:
Fliers, newspapers, catalogs, magazines, brochures, notebook paper, computer paper, books, pamphlets and junk mail, paperboard (such as cereal boxes), and scrap paper.

In the green bins:
Metal or aluminum cans, aluminum foil, glass bottles (all colors), #1-7 plastics bottles, #5 tubs (such as yogurt cups), milk cartons, and drink/juice boxes.

If you want to know more about how you can be involved on campus, contact the Ithaca College Resource and Environmental Management Program (REMP) at irecycle@ithaca.edu.
