"Producing More African American Scholars in Science and Technology:
Metacognition is the Key!"

Saundra McGuire is Adjunct Professor of Chemistry and Director of the Center for Academic Success at Louisiana State University.

She studies ways in which university courses can be more effectively taught and how
students can more effectively learn. This involves helping faculty understand today's undergraduate and graduate students, helping them recognize the incongruence between the requirements for success in high school vs. university science and mathematics courses, and helping them recognize common attitudes and behaviors that inhibit learning. She aids faculty in the development of interactive teaching strategies that dramatically increase student learning.

Saundra McGuire received the 2006 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring, awarded in a White House Oval Office ceremony.
