Ithaca College

The School of Humanities and Sciences and the Department of Writing are pleased to present poet and fiction writer Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni as part of this semester's Distinguished Visiting Writers Series. She will read from her work at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18, in Clark Lounge, Egbert Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Divakaruni has published 15 books of fiction and poetry. Her work has been included in over 50 anthologies, including Best American Short Stories, The O’Henry Prize Stories, and The Pushcart Prize Anthology. Her book of short stories, Arranged Marriage, won the 1996 American Book Award, the Bay Area Book Reviewers Award, and the PEN Josephine Miles Award for fiction. The Mistress of Spices appeared on several best book lists, including the San Francisco Chronicle’s "100 Best Books of the 20th Century."

Divakaruni's subjects include women, immigration, the South Asian experience, history, myth, magic, and diversity. Her books have been translated into 20 languages, including Dutch, Hebrew, Russian, and Japanese. Two novels, The Mistress of Spices and Sister of My Heart, have been made into films. She teaches creative writing at the University of Houston.
