Award-Winning Fiction Writer Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni Reads WednesdayContributed by Jack Wang on 02/13/09
Divakaruni has published 15 books of fiction and poetry. Her work has been included in over 50 anthologies, including Best American Short Stories, The O’Henry Prize Stories, and The Pushcart Prize Anthology. Her book of short stories, Arranged Marriage, won the 1996 American Book Award, the Bay Area Book Reviewers Award, and the PEN Josephine Miles Award for fiction. The Mistress of Spices appeared on several best book lists, including the San Francisco Chronicle’s "100 Best Books of the 20th Century." Divakaruni's subjects include women, immigration, the South Asian experience, history, myth, magic, and diversity. Her books have been translated into 20 languages, including Dutch, Hebrew, Russian, and Japanese. Two novels, The Mistress of Spices and Sister of My Heart, have been made into films. She teaches creative writing at the University of Houston. In addition to giving a reading, Divakaruni will share in teaching a master class in writing to Ithaca College students.
