Each year during Black History Month, the National Black Justice Coalition (NJBC), a civil rights organization, takes time to acknowledge the contributions and achievements of black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. The NJBC notes that, all too often, the contributions of same-gender-loving people are overlooked, omitted, or portrayed in negative ways.

The profiles can be found at the organization's homepage:

National Black Justice Coalition

The NBJC provides these profiles of people of note in black history who knew the joy and experienced the challenges of same-gender love and affection, as a small token of appreciation and homage to those who made our world beautiful, saved lives, advocated for justice, created music, art and culture that endures.

Among the people highlighted this month include Benjamin Banneker, Ron Simmons, Dr. Marjorie Hill, Lorenzo Robertson, Angela Davis, Alice Walker, and Harriet Tubman.

The profiles are listed in the menu on the right side of the homepage. You can also choose to join the news update e-mail list by selecting the link at the top of any page. If you join the organization's e-mail list, you'll receive the profiles each week, along with other news stories published on the website.
