Jafeth Gómez Ledesma began his life as an artist working in adult literacy education in his community in Cauca, Colombia. He used art not only to promote literacy but to develop political awareness, social consciousness and cultural pride. His art has evolved over the years, but continues to celebrate the lives, cultures, and political struggle of the people of Cauca.

Gómez will give a public talk in Textor 103 on Thursday, February 26, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Gómez's visit to Ithaca is sponsored by the Central NY chapter of Colombia Support Network (CNY-CSN). CNY-CSN is part of a sister community relationship between the NY cities of Ithaca, Cortland, and Syracuse and the community of Cajibío, Cauca Department, Colombia.

Gómez has worked closely with this community, and has frequently portrayed the political mobilization of the Small Farmer's Movement of Cajibío in his art. He will be introduced by Ithaca City Council member Eric Rosario. Musician Colleen Kattau will perform several songs, and Gómez will show slides of his work.

The event is free and open to the public.
