"Water Theory" Exhibit Opens February 26 at Handwerker GalleryContributed by Cheryl Kramer on 02/23/09
According to the artists: " 'Water Theory' is the overarching title for a series of new installations that are thematically related, using water as metaphor. This new work is the product of studies we conducted as artists in residence in Iceland, Everglades National Park, Yosemite National Park, Chesky Krumlov, the Czech Republic, and Beijing. Drawing from a variety of visual, sound, and media elements, from both natural and man-made environments, the overall structure of the works incorporate video projection on walls, the floor, and three-dimensional objects. Rather than water, a metaphoric river of projected imagery is created as a play on ubiquitous media." Additionally, the works exploit the possibilities of manipulated audio, matching exaggerated sounds with the slowly examined visual textures and incongruous landscape. Megan Roberts, a composer and media artist, and Raymond Ghirardo, sculptor and media artist, have been collaborators in video, sound sculpture, installation, and performance for the past 31 years. There will be an artists' talk on Thursday, April 2, at 12:15 p.m., followed by a Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival artists' reception from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. All Handwerker Gallery events are free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through Sunday, April 5. This exhibition is cosponsored by the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival with generous support from the Park Foundation. Installation works produced in residence at Yaddo, Saratoga Springs (New York) and at Red Gate Gallery, Beijing, China. Additional support was provided by the New York State Council on the Arts, the Experimental Television Center, the New York Foundation for the Arts, James B. Pendleton Grant from the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College, the Artist in Residence program at Everglades National Park, and the Milkwood Artist Residency in Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic.
