The Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen film series will offer a screening of A Jihad for Love, featuring the stories of lesbian and gay Muslims. Islam is the world's second-largest and fastest-growing religion. Muslim filmmaker Parvez Sharma travels the world of this dynamic faith, discovering the stories of its most unlikely storytellers: lesbian and gay Muslims.

The screening, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Monday, March 2, at 7:00 p.m. in Textor 102.

A Jihad for Love is a daring documentary filmed in twelve countries and nine languages. Filmmaker Parvez Sharma has gone where the silence is loudest, filming with great risk in nations where government permission to make this film was not an option.

The film has been recognized with awards, including

  • MIX BRASIL, Sao Paulo Brasil: award for best documentary
  • Image + Nation Film Festival, Montreal, Canada: award for best documentary
  • Tri-Continental Film Festival, India: Jury Award for best documentary
  • One World International Human Rights Film Festival, Prague, Czech Republic: Rudolf Vrba Jury special mention
  • Torino Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, Italy: best documentary

Sponsored by the Ithaca College Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Education, Outreach, and Services, the film series this year will explore sexual orientation and identity through the lens of faith. For a complete schedule visit the "Events" section of the LGBT Center website (www.ithaca.edu/lgbt) or contact the LGBT Center for a film series postcard.
