Composer Sydney Hodkinson Next Karel Husa Visiting Professor of CompositionContributed by Susan Harris on 03/19/09
Enduring Masters and Ithaca College will host Sydney Hodkinson as the Karel Husa Visiting Professor of Composition, a position awarded to a major figure in music composition today, from March 21 to March 24. High Fidelity called his work " ... marvelously inventive ... emotionally and aurally involving, full of wonderfully mysterious sounds." The visiting professors come to the Ithaca College campus during the course of the academic year to lecture on their music and issues relevant to contemporary composition. In addition, during their time on campus, they hold private lessons with the School of Music's composition majors. During their visit and residency, their music is performed and examined by Ithaca College School of Music faculty and students. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1934, Sydney Hodkinson received his bachelor and master of music degrees from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, where he studied composition with Louis Mennini and Bernard Rogers. He continued his studies in composition at the Princeton Seminars with Elliott Carter, Roger Sessions, and Milton Babbitt. He received his doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Michigan in 1968, studying with Leslie Bassett, Niccolo Castiglioni, Ross Lee Finney, and George B. Wilson.
