Passover 5769-2009

Contributed by Melinda Butler on 03/24/09

Passover begins at dusk on Wednesday, April 8, and ends eights days later on Thursday, April 16, when it gets dark.

Seders will be held on the balcony of Terrace Dining Hall the first two nights, and meals will be served there the entire week of Passover.

Hillel encourages students to go home to be with their families but, if you cannot, urges everyone to either attend the communal seders on campus or gather with friends and make a seder on your own. We have haggadas and "how-to" expertise to assist you in doing this.

We also ask that faculty and administrators be sensitive to the needs of those students who are more traditional in their religious practice of Passover who may not attend classes on the eve of the holiday if they travel home (April 8), the first two days (April 9-10) and last two days (April 15-16) of the holiday, which are considered holy days. Such students need to remember that it is their obligation to bring this to the attention of their professors and make arrangements to make up work that is missed.

The first seder will be held Wednesday, April 8, at 8:00 p.m. For those wishing to light candles, please come as early as 7:30 p.m. There will be at least two student-run seders the first night: a Reform and one in a more traditional, Conservative style.

The second seder is Thursday, April 9, at 9:00 p.m. It is run by CHABAD and is very traditional; there will be lots of fun plus good discussions. It will last into the wee hours.
