Come to a lively interactive session about personal safety created especially for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and allied students -- Wednesday, April 1, at 7:00 p.m. in Clark Lounge, Campus Center.

This session for the LGBT community and allies establishes a framework for how
assertive posture and speech translates into more empowered living.

  • Role plays and exercises to practice these important skills
  • Discussion of "why, what, and when" realities of speaking up and defending yourself
  • Easy-to-remember techniques that can be used in a variety of situations
  • Learn blocks, kicks, strikes, and escapes from wrist grabs

Presenter Shura Gat, lead instructor, StrongStance, earned a bachelor of arts in women's studies from Wellesley College and a master of arts in sports sociology from the University of Iowa. She holds a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo and is also ranked in Judo and Kakutouryu Jujitsu. Shura is a graduate of the IM School of Healing Arts, an institution dedicated to supporting personal growth and wholeness healing. Shura draws on the different aspects of her education as she develops StrongStance and the empowerment-oriented workshops she offers.

The session is coponsored by the Safety Awareness Committee and the Advocacy Center. Refreshments will be available.
