Celebrate Asia Month in April!

Contributed by Tiffany Cheng on 03/30/09

April is Asia Month and we have events lined up for you each week!

On Thursday April 2 at 7pm at Clark Lounge, a historian, Charlotte Harris Rees will be speaking about the authentic maps that her father discovered in 1972, which suggests the Chinese may have actually discovered the Americas. She has spoken at the Library of Congress and written several books such as "The Asiatic Fathers of America," and the "Secret Maps of the Ancient World." Join us as she tackles what we've learned at a young age: "In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." But now the question is, did he really?

We will be having Film nights every Tuesday at 7pm. I will keep you guys posted.

On Thursday April 9 at 4:30 pm at the Towers Dining Hall, we will be hosting our Asia Cuisine Night. There will be all types of Asian food from lo mein to dumplings. This night may be most convenient for Ithaca College campus students as they can just use their meal plan.

On Monday April 13 from 6pm to 9pm, we will be hosting Dancing Lesson. Belly dancers from Moonlight Dancer: Studio of Middle Easter Dance located in Ithaca, will be teaching the local community how to belly dance! Additionally, we will be discussing about cultural games, festivities, and traditions followed by the Asian culture! This event is free and open to the public!

On Saturday, April 18 at 6pm, we will be hosting our biggest event of the year: Asia Night. During this night, we will have cultural games, activities and performances from both the local and campus communities. Additionally, we will have a fashion show, lion dancing from little kids, and food from the local restaurants for $4 a plate. It will also be the premiere of our version of Beauty and the Geek. Come and meet individuals from IC and from the local area!

To end Asia Month, we will be hosting a water fight around the end of the month. The details are to be determined very soon. The water fight is to "wash away the old and bring in the new," as individuals must wash or clean themselves for the New Years. In Thailand, children get off school to have water fights in order to celebrate the New Year. So join us then for a fun and wet day!

We always invite volunteers to help out on these days. So just shoot us an email at icasiancultureclub@yahoo.com!

See you there!
