Anthony Hopson Named Assistant VP for Community and Government RelationsContributed by David Maley on 03/31/09
In his new position, Hopson will provide strategic direction and leadership in promoting community relations within the college and local community as well as the state and federal governments. He will work in direct support of the president to advance institution objectives and planning initiatives; serve as a member of the President’s Council and participate in college-wide policy development and planning processes; and serve as the president’s representative in a liaison role with students, parents, faculty and staff. “Strong relationships with community leaders and with our state and federal representatives are vital to the successful fulfillment of our educational mission,” said President Tom Rochon. “Anthony has extraordinary communication and relationship-building skills, and I know that he will be a valuable partner in advancing the college’s efforts on those fronts.” In his most recent position, Hopson provided the president and dean at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences with leadership in and support for maintaining relations with key civic organizations in the City of Worcester. He served as the liaison to the chamber of commerce and the Colleges of Worcester Consortium, and collaborated with the Office of College Relations and Communications in the administration of external and professional affairs. “I look forward to representing the outstanding students, faculty, staff and alumni of Ithaca College as we endeavor to enhance our relationships with local, state and federal representatives,” said Hopson. “I am pleased to join President Rochon and the college’s dynamic leadership team as we build upon Ithaca College’s stellar reputation for community engagement and academic excellence.” Hopson had previously served at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences as associate and assistant dean of students, as assistant dean of students at Clark University, as assistant director of minority affairs/outreach programs at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and in student and administrative services positions at Capital Community College and the University of Connecticut–West Hartford. He holds a bachelor’s degree in general studies and master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Connecticut. Hopson’s professional and community affiliations have included the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, where he serves on the regional advisory board; the Barton Center for Diabetes Education Inc., where he is a member of the Board of Trustees; and membership on the City of Worcester UniverCity Partnership Committee and Colleges of the Worcester Consortium. He has given conference presentations on such topics as “Creating Campus Connections: College and Media Collaborations During a Campus Crisis,” “How Technology Impacts Campus Safety,” and “Essentials of Effective Student Leadership.” Hopson will start at Ithaca College on June 15.
