On Thursday, April 9, at 5:15 p.m., assistant professor of English Laura Murphy will present a lecture entitled, "Narrating 'White Slavery!': Unionized Labor, Organized Crime, and Commodified Women in The Wire."  The lecture is sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society.

The lecture, which will focus upon the depiction of modern-day slavery in the HBO television series The Wire, will take place in Friends Hall 305. Refreshments will be provided.

Laura Murphy is in her first year as a faculty member in the department of English. Her area of specialization is African and African-American literature, and she is an active member of Free the Slaves, a nonprofit group dedicated to the abolition of modern-day slavery. Professor Murphy is also the adviser for the Ithaca College chapter of Free the Slaves, which she founded here on campus.
