English Department Faculty Member Laura Murphy Gives Talk about HBO's The WireContributed by Claire Gleitman on 04/07/09
The lecture, which will focus upon the depiction of modern-day slavery in the HBO television series The Wire, will take place in Friends Hall 305. Refreshments will be provided. Laura Murphy is in her first year as a faculty member in the department of English. Her area of specialization is African and African-American literature, and she is an active member of Free the Slaves, a nonprofit group dedicated to the abolition of modern-day slavery. Professor Murphy is also the adviser for the Ithaca College chapter of Free the Slaves, which she founded here on campus. |

On Thursday, April 9, at 5:15 p.m., assistant professor of English Laura Murphy will present a lecture entitled, "Narrating 'White Slavery!': Unionized Labor, Organized Crime, and Commodified Women in The Wire." The lecture is sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society.
