Danette I. Johnson, professor of speech communication, was named a 2009 Distinguished Teaching Fellow by the Eastern Communication Association (ECA).

The award was presented this month in Philadelphia at ECA's annual meeting. Professor Johnson attended the meeting with three IC undergraduate scholars, who were inspired to submit material that derived from coursework done in Johnson's classes.

The Distinguished Teaching Fellow recognition is the association's highest award for teaching excellence and is based on both "a distinguished career of teaching excellence in the field of communication" and a record of "active and continuous service to ECA."

Professor Johnson's nomination for the award was bolstered by years of outstanding student evaluations obtained here at IC, as well as letters from IC colleagues and students. Some of the letters were contributed by those at West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she taught prior to joining the IC faculty.
