It is my great joy to announce that, after many years of planning, Ithaca College has met its $52.5 million fund-raising goal for the new athletics and events center. As a result, the Executive Committee of the Ithaca College Board of Trustees has approved construction of the center, beginning this summer.

In all, more than 2,600 Ithaca alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff, students, and trustees contributed to the project -- the culmination of a 20-year dream to update athletics facilities from those constructed for a student body half the size of Ithaca College today.

A tremendous volunteer fund-raising effort was led by the A&E Center National Committee, who encouraged their friends, classmates, and teammates to give. Alumni from various sports teams competed to see which team could score the highest percentage of participation in the campaign. The winner was the women's cross country team, with 31 percent of alumni making a gift.

To celebrate this remarkable achievement, the College will host a brief groundbreaking ceremony on June 16 at 5:00 p.m. at the site of the new A&E center, south of the Garden Apartments and adjacent to Boothroyd Hall. Please come and share the excitement of moving those first few shovelfuls of dirt.

To all who made gifts to the A&E center, thank you for helping to bring this much-needed project to life!

This is nice, but I certainly hope the same fundraising efforts are going into keeping our classes and professors in tact.

We still have not heard from the administration where the money for operating expenses (estimated to be at least $1.5 million/year) is going to come from. This new building alone would consume almost 1% of the current annual operating budget. Is there going to be an equally robust fund-raising drive for these costs? Or is the administration going to continue cutting full-time faculty positions in favor of adjuncts? We're already facing hiring freezes and increasing class sizes. The administration has promised transparency on issues of budgeting but the fact that this significant addition to the physical plant is being built without a discussion of how we will pay for its operation is disappointing.
