If you have a smartphone (a recent generation mobile device that supports a Web browser) or PDA, you may be able to wirelessly sync this device with the Oracle Calendar service.

In order to do this, these devices must have a data plan or the ability to wirelessly access the Internet. ITS can offer configuration guidance for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch, Blackberry, and devices running Palm and Windows Mobile operating systems. While ITS cannot guarantee support or functionality for these devices or operating systems, we'll do our best to get you going!

myHome 2.0 and Calendar
The next release of the myHome portal (myHome 2.0) will allow you to easily view your calendar entries from your smartphone (as well as view most of your other myHome portlets). Because of this new interface, you might not need to get a separate syncing client! This release is tentatively scheduled for the end of August. If you don't need to actually add or edit meetings, myHome will more then likely take care of your needs.

Sync Clients
ITS recommends the Synthesis sync client for Apple iPhone and iPod Touch, as well as devices using Windows Mobile and Palm operating systems. The Nexthaus sync client (version 2.47) is recommended for the Blackberry. Users must purchase a license ($20-$40) directly from these vendors. (Prices are subject to change without notice.)

NotifyLink On-Demand Service
This is another option for wireless syncing for all devices and operating systems. NotifyLink On-Demand is an off-site hosting service providing "push" technology (i.e. automatic calendar and e-mail synchronization at regular intervals without the need for manual intervention), as well as 24/7 support for mobile device syncing. NotifyLink On-Demand costs approximately $180 annually and requires the installation of client software and a product key. Please contact the ITS Helpdesk to purchase a product key.

What Does This Mean for Palm Treo Users?
For the past few years, ITS has focused support on the Treo smartphone. With so many popular devices now available, we are moving away from Treo-specific support and moving towards supporting wireless syncing technology for a broader range of devices.

Oracle CalendarSync Changes
Wired syncing via Oracle CalendarSync has been the traditional sync method for IC users. However, CalendarSync is no longer being supported by Oracle and may not work with newer devices. Over the next year, ITS will be phasing out support of Oracle CalendarSync and moving away from installing this application on workstations.

For more information about wireless syncing, see the smartphone support page.
