Peter Orlando, a recent graduate of Ithaca College, has been named to the United States National Team that will compete in the 2009 World Rowing Under-23 Championships, to be held July 23-26 in Racice, Czech Republic. The announcement was made Monday by USRowing, the national governing body for the sport of rowing.

Orlando will compete in the lightweight quadruple sculls, one of 21 events for which world champions will be crowned at the Under 23 World Championships.

He qualified for the national team after being invited to compete at the GMS Rowing Center in Connecticut, where he and his three teammates earned their spots in the World Championships.

A four-year member of Ithaca's crew, Orlando was named the winner of the 2009 Tallman Cup as the program's top oarsman. He rowed in the varsity 8 boat for three years including this spring when he helped the Bombers to a gold medal at the state championships (their first since 1993). Ithaca rallied to beat four-time defending champion Marist in the final. His rowing resume also includes experience with the New York Athletic Club.

Orlando is the first Bomber to compete in the Under-23 World Championships since Mary Obidinski '97, a member of the Ithaca Athletic Hall of Fame.
