The first Sustainability Café of the fall 2009 series has the theme, "Power to the Planet: Using Large-Scale Solar Energy to Achieve CO2 Reductions."

This Café, being held in conjunction with the Environmental Seminar and the Chemistry Seminar, will be held on Tuesday, September 8, at 4:00 p.m. in 112 Center for Natural Sciences.

Café presenter Akiko Fillinger, associate professor of chemistry at Ithaca College, focuses her analytical chemistry research work on alternative energy and fuels. In addition to her team's work converting Ithaca College dining hall fryer grease into ASTM-accredited biodiesel, Fillinger has led campus research efforts investigating the use of nanocrystalline cuprous oxide in photocells in order to generate hydrogen from water. This exciting concept offers the possibility to harness a climate-friendly renewable power source. Come learn about the potential of this technology to power the planet.

Teachable edibles" -- seasonal, organic, and/or local foods -- served at the fall 2009 Sustainability Café series are being supported by Ithaca College Dining Services. Please bring your reusable mug and fill up at the drinking fountain or provide your beverage of choice.
