Calling all past and present members of the Sustainably Conscious Community: join us for an informal reunion to meet one another, and share memories!

Thursday, September 24, 2009

3:30 - 5:00 pm

Terrace 2 Lounge

Also joining us will be members of a Burmese NGO, Metta. They have traveled to Ithaca to learn more about College's and city's focus on sustainability, and find ways to incorporate sustainability into their operations. They would love to hear about how living in the SCC has helped residents make more sustainably choices, and advocate for positive change.

Metta works in several sectors: Agriculture/Forestry (Farmer Field Schools mainly, Community-led Forestry programs), Education (Early Childhood Care and Development, Primary Child Centered Education, Adult Literacy), Health (Hygiene Promotion, Community Managed Health Care, HIV, Malaria), Livelihood (individual and group income producing projects at the village level) and Relief and Reconstruction (both man-made and natural disasters).

Metta, as a local NGO in Burma/Myanmar, is unique in having successfully established a civil society approach to sustainable community development in this military-ruled country. Other groups in the country look to them for leadership, so their impact is much wider than themselves; this is especially true since Cyclone Nargis a year ago when many small groups popped up and became involved in "service", "charity", and other "relief" efforts which, unfortunately, go away after the emergency.

In an effort to be sustainable, please RSVP by Monday, September 21 at 5 pm,  so we know how much food to prepare.

Current SCC residents: RSVP on Nexo.

Past SCC residents & Members of the Campus Community: RSVP by adding a comment to this post.
