On Wednesday, September 23 at 7:00PM in Textor Hall 102, a panel will discuss "Approaching the Constitutional Threshold: Ending the Heterosexual Marriage Monopoly?"

This special event, in observance of Constitution Day 2009, commemorates the September 17, 1787 signing of the U.S. Constitution. This event is sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Department of Politics.

The panel will be moderated by Beth Harris from Politics. Special guest panelists include Mariette Geldenhuys, attorney-at-law in private practice in Ithaca, and  L. Richard Stumbar, partner in the local law firm of Schlather, Stumbar, Parks & Salk. Geldenhuys and Stumbar served as co-counsel for the New York State appellate court challenge of same sex marriage. This panel will be rounded out by Sybil Conrad, assistant director of the Campus Center, legally wed her life partner, Kim, in California and has since been dealing with the uncertain legal landscape of marital recognition.

This event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the discussion.
