Ready for a life-changing experience?

Apply now to travel to the Dominican Republic in June 2010 with Sociology 312, "Culture and Society: An International Field Experience."

Professor Alicia Swords and the leadership team for Sociology 312 are now accepting applications for the Spring 2010 class "Culture & Society: An International Field Experience."

The Spring semester class focuses on colonialism, development and globalization in the Republic as preparation for a three-week trip in  June 2010.   Approximate travel dates are June 1-21.

The trip combines seminars and hands-on learning about social change, race relations, human rights, colonialism and neocolonialism, the environment and sustainability, and immigration.

Activities include visits with social change organizations, and excursions to colonial areas, urban and rural sectors.  Students from Ithaca College and Cornell University are eligible to apply.  All are encouraged to share their experiences with college and community groups when they return.

Participation in the course and the trip requires an application (due November 2) and interview.  We plan to notify selected students by mid-November.

Students are required to pay all travel and trip-related expenses, estimated at $2250, pending budget approval.  Information is available about raising money for the trip.

For more information, please contact Professor Alicia Swords in the Department of Sociology, email sociology312@gmail.com, download the application and more information at https://www.ithaca.edu/hs/depts/sociology/facstaff/aswords/docs/ , or call 607-274-1209.

Application deadline:  Nov. 2.

The 3-credit Spring class meets Mondays 6:50 - 9:25 PM.  The summer course is for 1 credit.

Please note:  Registration in the course does not guarantee that you will participate in the travel component of the program, as participating students must be in good judicial standing.

All students who are selected for the program must also fill out the short-term programs application form from the Ithaca College Office of International Programs and return the application to the Office of International Programs by Feb 27, 2010.  https://www.ithaca.edu/oip/abroad_apply.htm
