The Bomber volleyball team will take advantage of this weekend’s Regional Challenge, Ithaca’s final home tournament of the regular season, to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research and treatment. The team will be hosting “Play for Pink” at Saturday and Sunday’s matches, and will be accepting donations as well as conducting a silent auction in support for the cause. All proceeds will go to the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes, and will help local women and their families affected by the disease.

he effort is being spearheaded by Ithaca graduate assistant coach Brianna D’Errico, a member of the squad in 2007 and 2008. D’Errico has coordinated the team as they designed promotional materials, organized gameday events, and solicited local businesses to help the effort.

In addition to raising money, the team will be tabling on campus to increase awareness of cancer and how to reduce the risk of acquiring it, as well as the benefits of early detection. The team will be providing information on the effects diet, exercise and lifestyle can have on a cancer-free life. This material will also be available at the tournament.

The weekend’s matches will begin Saturday at 1 p.m., with the final matches set to start at 6 p.m. Play resumes Sunday at 11 a.m. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to show support for the cause, and are asked to consider a donation.
