What do anthropology majors do after graduation? Come an hear the stories of three graduates whose journeys included working at non-profit organizations, gaining a graduate degree in forensic anthropology in Scotland, and becoming a project manager at a New York based archaeology company.

Emily MacDowell (’06) interned at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., published for National Geographic, worked as a Coordinator for CORAfrica, an Ithaca based non-profit organization, and is currently the U.S. Office Manager for the DREAM Project located in Ithaca. The Dominican Republic Education And Mentoring (DREAM) Project, a US 501c3 nonprofit organization, provides quality education for all children born into poverty in rural areas and small communities of the Dominican Republic.

 

Elana Sukert (’08), interned with Cultural Survival, the Ithaca Health Alliance and Tompkins County Health Care Task Force as an undergraduate. She also gained experience working in a veterinary hospital and in the Onondaga County medical examiner’s office. She recently completed her Masters’ Degree in Forensic Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland with a thesis project on “Burn, Burn, Burn Like a Ring of Fire: The Reflexive Relationship Between Fire and the Thermal Damage to the Body.”

 

Corey McQuinn (’98) As an undergraduate, Corey attended local field schools exploring prehistoric and historic period sites. By April 2001, Corey found a job with Hartgen Archeological Associates, Inc., near Albany, New York. Starting as a field archeologist, Corey gradually rose to project director. As HAA Project Director, Corey has directed surveys of all phases on prehistoric and historic sites, including a 19th-century cemetery mitigation in Rome, New York.  As one of the more unique aspects of HAA, Inc., Corey is one of three archeologists heading up a summer camp program for junior high and high school students, with a third camp opening in 2010. Currently, Corey is finishing a Phase II site examination report on 11 historic urban sites in Utica, NY, in advance of a DOT highway reconstruction project.
