Effective November 30th, please be advised that prices on bottled water and carbonated beverages will increase 10 cents and 5 cents respectively.

This increase is due to the recent passing of the New York Returnable Container Act (Bottle Bill).

Help your wallet and the environment at the same time. For your convenience IC Square Food Court and La Vincita are now offering iced tea and lemon-aid in PLA (Poly-Lactic Acid) compostable cups for only $1.39. Look for these items ready to go in the coolers at Food Court and La Vincita. In addition, fountain sodas are not affected by this price increase.

The NY State deposit on carbonated beverages is nothing new. Why are we being charged more for sodas?

You're correct: The New York State Returnable Container Law went into effect in 1983. However, the law was amended this year to allow bottlers to charge an additional 5 cent redemption handling fee on carbonated beverages to retailers (like us!) and dealers (like supermarkets). This handling fee is not indicated on the bottle; only the 5 cent deposit that you can get back from a redemption center is indicated.

As a result, our suppliers charge us 5 cents MORE per bottle for carbonated beverages as of November 8th, and 10 cents more for bottled water (that's the 5 cent deposit, plus the 5 cent handling fee) than before.

By the way: in addition to the state recovering 80% of the unclaimed deposits charged by bottlers every year (this has always been the case), the state will now also recover 80% of the handling fees of unclaimed deposits from bottlers.

I'm sure the vast majority of bottles purchased at on-campus dining locations are dropped into the college-provided receptacles for recyclable bottles, so presumably the college receives the deposit back... and if not, the processes should be reevaluated to ensure that this source of income is not forfeited.

Also, I'm sure you realize that the new NYS bottle deposit on water is only 5 cents, not the 10 cents that is being added now.

I understand necessary price increases due to inflation, and I realize that Sodexo is a for-profit entity that is attempting to make money off of the students on IC's campus. Explain things to us honestly -- did the price from your supplier go up?

By the way - $1.39 for the "compostable" lemonade and iced tea is pretty ridiculous. Are the compostable cups that expensive to charge $1.39 for a not-very-large cup of sugar water?
