The Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs seeks Ithaca College students interested in presenting their undergraduate research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in Spring 2010 in Montana. Presentation abstracts and a travel funding request form must be submitted no later than December 4, 2009.

The 24th National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) will bring together undergraduates involved in scholarly and artistic activities from more than 300 colleges and universities in the nation, drawing well over 2,200 undergraduates, faculty, and administrators to promote undergraduate research in all fields of study.

The 2010 national conference will be held from Thursday, April 15, through Saturday, April 17, 2009, at the University of Montana at Missoula. A limited number of travel stipends - of at least $750 - will be made available for Ithaca students whose abstracts are selected. Students should expect to pay for any conference costs not covered by Ithaca College - they should at least plan to purchase meals not included in the conference registration fee.

Students who have previously been funded by the Office of the Provost to attend an NCUR conference may submit an abstract, but if accepted, will not be eligible for repeat funding from the Provost. You should contact your department chair or school dean to inquire about additional conference funding support. If multiple students are listed as co-authors on an accepted presentation abstract, only one representative from the team will be funded to attend the conference. Please note that the James J. Whalen Academic Symposium will be held in April 2010; other members of your team may plan to present there.

The Office of the Provost will work with all selected students to coordinate their conference and travel arrangements. It is expected that participants will make advance arrangements with their professors to fulfill all academic obligations in order to attend the full conference (which includes a day to travel on Wednesday, April 14). The delegation should plan on returning to Ithaca on Sunday, April 18th.

An application for NCUR student travel funding must be submitted to the Provosts Office no later than December 4, 2009. If this funding request has not been submitted by the deadline date, you will be ineligible to receive funding support from the Provosts Office, even if your abstract is accepted by NCUR for conference presentation.

Below are links to instructions on how to submit an online abstract of your research project. Speak with your faculty research adviser about this opportunity, as he or she must sign off on your abstract. NCUR 2010 abstract submissions deadline is December 4, 2009.

Submission abstracts should:

  • State in clear terms the central research question and the purpose of the research
  • Provide a brief discussion of the research methodology
  • State conclusions (either final or anticipated)
  • Be well organized

All abstracts will undergo a rigorous review by a panel of faculty reviewers. Abstract reviewers will evaluate submissions based on the criteria listed above and will assess the overall creativity within the context of the specific academic discipline.

One additional benefit of presenting at NCUR is the opportunity for students to publish their work in the conference proceedings, which are distributed to institutions across the nation. All student presenters at the conference -- including students in the performing and visual arts -- are invited to submit manuscripts for review by the Proceedings Board.
