Sustainability Presentation: “Ecology, Design, and Agriculture” on Tuesday, February 2 at 7:00PMContributed by Marian Brown on 01/27/10
The monoculture mindset of our current culture separates things that are, in reality, integral to one another. The science of ecology, the art of design, and the practice of growing food are three related disciplines that stand divorced from each other in America today. What might an ecologically designed agriculture look like? Dave Jacke will focus on the concept of edible forest gardening as an example of such a synthesis appropriate to the temperate deciduous forest biome, and then extend the discussion to other regions. Dave Jacke, primary author of the award winning two-volume book “Edible Forest Gardens”, has studied ecology and design since the 1970s, and has run his own ecological design firm--Dynamics Ecological Design--since 1984. Dave is an engaging and passionate teacher of ecological design and permaculture. He has designed, built, and planted landscapes, homes, farms, and communities mainly in the Northeast. This presentation is jointly sponsored by the Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute, the “Commit to Change” program, and the Sustainability Initiative at Ithaca College. Support for the “Commit to Change” program was provided through a generous grant from the HSBC in the Community Foundation to the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences.
