Theodora Hanslowe — an Ithaca native who has sung in the world’s premier opera houses — will visit Ithaca College on Saturday, Feb. 13, as the second performer in the Ithaca College Concerts season of “Recitalists Extraordinaire.” A mezzo-soprano, Hanslowe will begin her performance at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music. Her recital will feature Mahler’s “Rückert Lieder,” music by Hahn and Rossini, and a set of cabaret and show tunes. Dennis Giauque will collaborate on piano.

Tickets for the concert are on sale at the Ticket Center Ithaca at (607) 273-4497 or (800) 284-8422 or at ithacaevents.com, and at the door if available. Individual ticket prices are as follows:

  • Children, senior citizens and Ithaca College students — $11
  • Ithaca College alumni, faculty, staff and administrators; Friends of Ithaca College; other students — $19
  • General public — $22

Born in Ithaca, Hanslowe grew up in nearby Newfield and studied at Cornell, where her father was a professor. Her mother was a local music teacher for many years. Known for her interpretation of Rossini heroines, Hanslowe has sung the title role in “La Cenerentola,” “L’Italiana in Algeri” and the role of Rosina for such houses as the Metropolitan and San Francisco Operas, Opera de Montreal and Semper Oper Dresden. For the last 16 years, Hanslowe debuted in opera houses throughout the world. She re-created the title role of Massenet’s “Chérubin” with the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in Monaco, where the opera had its premiere, and the role of the Composer in a new production of “Ariadne auf Naxos” for Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires.

Equally comfortable on the concert stage, Hanslowe has performed Britten’s “Spring Symphony” with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and André Previn. She has also appeared with the symphonies of San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Stuttgart, among others. She was soloist on the Grammy-nominated recording of Bach’s “Mass in B Minor” with Boston Baroque and Martin Pearlman on the Telarc label. With the St. Louis Symphony and Hans Vonk, she made her Carnegie Hall debut in 1997, singing Berlioz’s “Les Nuits d’été.”

Dennis Giauque has been an assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City for the past 28 years. During that time he has coached and prepared countless singers for many television broadcasts, CD releases and gala performances as well as regular performances. He was the pianist and head of musical preparation for the award-winning recording of “Ariadne auf Naxos,” which was recorded with James Levine and the Vienna Philharmonic.

The Ithaca College Concerts season will conclude on Friday, March 26, with a recital by organist Cameron Carpenter.
