As of Monday, February 15th, Ithaca College commuters living in the communities served by TCAT's two out-of-county routes may now use their valid staff ID card to authorize their free rides to and from work. This expansion of the College's support for employee commuting on TCAT to residents outside Tompkins County is being offered on a trial basis.

The two TCAT routes offering service outside Tompkins County are Route 20, serving Schuyler County communities (Watkins Glen, Burdett, Hector, Odessa, Montour Falls, and Mecklenburg) and Route 52, serving Tioga County communities (Newark Valley, Berkshire and Richford).

In order to utilize this College-supported commuting option, your valid Ithaca College staff ID card must be read electronically and accepted at the farebox. Use your card to authorize your first bus ride from your home community to downtown, and again to validate your second bus ride from downtown to campus on Route 11. If you experience any difficulty using your Ithaca College staff ID card for this purpose, please check with the ID Office in the Campus Center.

This free bus service should only be used by Ithaca College employees commuting to/from work. Because of the higher costs to the College to underwrite the commuting by those riding these out-of-county routes, over the next few months, we will be monitoring employee usage of this option and assessing the financial impact of extending the service beyond the trial period. Please note that we will not reimburse you for bus fares on any TCAT routes paid in cash nor will we refund the costs for passes you may have purchased.

If you haven't before considered using the TCAT bus to commute to work, check it out! Happy travels!

It would be great to see this supported and then expanded to Chemung County, too. Cornell currently assists with the costs of a daily commuter bus from Elmira for which i pay full fare and double the length of my day to get to and from Ithaca.
