Ithaca College remains officially open. We are monitoring the weather situation closely and are in consultation with local law enforcement agencies and other local employers regarding road conditions and the potential impact of the storm.

As per the Ithaca College Policy Manual, weather conditions, no matter how extreme, normally will not close the College when classes are in session. Classes or specific activities may be delayed or canceled without an official closing.

Employees are expected to work their normal hours unless the College is officially closed. A supervisor may not unilaterally decide to close a department. However, there are times when the College is not officially closed, but when conditions make it appropriate for a supervisor to be flexible in allowing employees to depart from their normal schedules. Employees who miss time because of late arrival, early departure, or absence due to inclement weather or other special condition may choose to make up the time, use personal or vacation time, or have a reduced paycheck if there are no accruals to use.

Any announcement of an official change in the College's operating status will be made via the Emergency Notification System (ENS) and posted on the Emergency Closing Hotline at (607) 274-1495.

I really am disappointed with this notice. There are many students walking from the circles and gardens and it isn't safe walking from there. It is not easy to get to class/ campus. It is slippery. Ithaca College should take more responsibility to ensure the safety of their faculty, staff and students. I am not satisfied with the reaction to this weather.

The grounds are very slippery, I have almost fallen several
times today. I actually fell out side of Emerson Hall last
evening due to black ice covered with snow. While I understand
it is hard to maintain grounds to this scale, it is becoming very
difficult to get around on foot.
Notice to Campus Community Concerning Severe Weather Comment from sfindla1 on 02/25/10
I agree with with previous comments. It is very difficult to walk around on foot
and also drive. The roads and sidewalks are extremely slippery and dangerous.
I've slipped quite a few times and don't understand why the school can't close
for once, even Cortland cancelled their classes for the day.

I totally agree. If this school is going to make us go to school it should be
safe. I fell once and slipped several times on my way from circles. The
biggest mistake on IC's part was not salting and clearing the STAIRS!
That is extremely dangerous.

I know that the overwhelming majority of students live on campus, but it is really difficult for commuters to arrive to campus safely. The college teaches us to make smart decisions throughout our time here yet during severe weather conditions they have no sympathy towards those who drive long distances and put their lives at risk.
Notice to Campus Community Concerning Severe Weather Comment from bkurtz1 on 02/25/10
Ithaca College fails to realize that many students drive to campus from some distance, many partially due to admission's poor planning. There are professors who will not show up, but not cancel and leave class with a TA. If you don't feel it's safe for you to drive, why is it safe for me? The college needs to realize that not everyone lives on campus or within walking distance. Just another disappointment with Ithaca College...the list keeps getting longer. Great job at blowing your reputation for a quality institution that isn't just another money hungry corporation IC, glad to see you care about the students.

It seems that many people are in agreement on the fact that the school should
pay more attention to the weather in terms of the needs of students, faculty and
staff. It also states in this intercom that the staff must come in to work or they
lose a vacation day, sick day or it's taken out of their check, which is completely
greedy on the schools part. If it gets this bad they should be able to have paid
days for these situations or at least not get penalized for something out of their
control. I see no point in even writing these comments unless someone with
higher power is willing to do something about it (especially if we, who are
paying $40K+ to go here, still feel it's unsafe to be outside).

does anyone know how to look at the radar? or the news about every other nearby school in the area (besides Cornell of course)closing?
Notice to Campus Community Concerning Severe Weather Comment from wlandon1 on 02/25/10
I am extremely disappointed. It's pretty obvious from this notice that IC has absolutely no regard or concern for the safety of its students and employees. Frankly, considering the current and impending weather situations, this is unacceptable - and I speak as both a student and part-time employee of the college.
Notice to Campus Community Concerning Severe Weather Comment from mrosenb1 on 02/25/10
I am a graduate student who commutes an hour to Ithaca every day. It is
ridiculous that Ithaca would stay open today. I realize that most students live on
campus, but there are some students and faculty that do commute. I have to
take a country road to get to Ithaca, so it is just impossible to get there in this
weather. I am disappointed that Ithaca is not more concerned for faculty and
students, especially since the forecast says specifically not to travel unless it is a
large emergency. My education makes up a big part of my life, but I am not
willing to risk my own life so that I can get it.

I'm extremely disappointed in the way Ithaca college is handling this whole ordeal. I know that are system and format on handling the snow out here is very precise and conductive. Unfortunately, this weather is affecting a lot of the off campus students and faculty members who are not don't live on the campus. As Jclark4 says, the stairs absolutely unsafe, people can get severely injured, and the roads are very slippery. Anything can happen in an instance and if things are not taken care of, you're going to see some people severely hurt. Think before you act.
Notice to Campus Community Concerning Severe Weather Comment from scary1 on 02/25/10
I agree it is ridiculous. I'm a commuter and the road conditions are continuing to
get worse. Not closing IC is putting all of the students and staff at risk,
especially when it is going to be getting worse into the night and tomorrow
morning.

I agree with everyone who has posted before me. It is slippery everywhere, and the road conditions are horrible. For those who have to travel long distances to get here, they shouldn't be penalized by reduced pay or in any other way. They should be allowed to stay home and off of the roads. In part, I understand how members of maintenance, the dining staff, and of course public safety have to be here to keep us safe and from starving, but I'd rather not have these people risking their lives to get to campus. It's not fair to their friends and family who have to worry whether or not they'll be safe. The same goes for professors and others who work and/or otherwise attend Ithaca College- no one should have to travel in this weather, especially if they live a great distance from campus.

I'm driving up 96-b right now and I agree with everyone, this is ridiculous!!!!!

Just a note to report that TCAT is not running as of 8pm, which may be a problem for those of us who use public transport. Here is the link: http://www.tcatbus.com/news/story/tcat-suspends-service-8-p-m.html

I don't even have classes on Friday so I could care less if
they got canceled but this is not fair. I'm not paying
47,000$ a year to force employees to drive in dangerous
conditions.

"employees who miss time because of late arrival, early
departure, or absence due to inclement weather or other
special condition may choose to make up the time, use
personal or vacation time, or have a reduced paycheck if
there are no accruals to use."

On a side note: The snow has blocked our door from closing
without forcefully pulling it shut. The alarm sounds louder
than the fire alarm if the door isnt shut after 15 seconds
and that alarm is right outside my door... and its going to
be there all night long...
