This year, more than 1 million Americans will have a heart attack or stroke, making heart disease the leading cause of death in men and women in this country. Luckily, taking a preventative approach can help you lower your risk and keep your heart strong and healthy for years to come.

5 Essential Heart Habits are:

  1. Get moving with exercise: 5 days a week for 30 minutes a day.
  2. Cut your fat for a healthy diet: Cutting the fat is the single most important thing you can do for your health and your waistline.
  3. Practice portion control: Try using your hand when measuring cups are not available. A closed fist equals the volume of one cup.
  4. Eat “functional foods”: Power your diet with foods that improve heart health.
  5. Reduce salt: The maximum daily amount recommended for most people is 2,300 miligrams per day, which is about one teaspoon.
