J. David Hammond, for whom Ithaca College's Health Center is named, passed away on Monday, March 22. He had served as director of the center from the time it was built in 1966 until his retirement in 1982.

The resolution of appreciation from the Ithaca College Board of Trustees upon the naming of the facility for Dr. Hammond noted, "His work with the students of the College, with their families, and with members of the College community has been characterized by an exceptional degree of compassion, understanding, and personal concern. The medical care program, the preventive medicine program, and the medical education program which complement the operations of the health center are the products of Dr. Hammond's leadership and that they are nationally recognized for their quality is evidence of his great professional ability."

He and his wife, Daphne, remained close to the College even after his retirement. They attended numerous campus events over the years and two of their three children, David Jr. and Rebecca, graduated from Ithaca, along with a granddaughter, Julia. In 2003 they established the Daphne B. Hammond Endowed Scholarship in Gerontology, which is awarded annually to an outstanding student majoring in aging studies. Daphne passed away in 2008.
