Dominic Mathiang will speak this Thursday, April 1 at 7:00 p.m. in Textor 103. Dominic is one of the refugees who fled southern Sudan during the early years of "civil war" in the 1980s, and who are known collectively as "The Lost Boys of Sudan."

The phrase Lost Boys is adapted from the story Peter Pan in which there was a wandering group of orphans known by that name. The Lost Boys of Sudan were among a highly vulnerable class of refugees know as unaccompanied minors. Today most are young men seeking to build new lives for themselves. While many have returned to their homelands, others have settled around the world and approximately 200 live in the Syracuse area.

Dominic spoke at IC more than a year ago. After years of believing that his mother was dead, he had recently learned that she was in fact alive and was trying to raise money to travel to Kenya (where she had settled) to visit her. Dominic has since completed that trip and will update those who were at his previous talk about the experience of seeing his mother.  Dominic will also talk about his experiences as a refugee in the United States and about the prospect for peace in Sudan.
