 Anthropology faculty Brook Hansen, Jack Rossen and David Turkon attended the 70th annual meetings of the Society for Applied Anthropology in Merida, Mexico from March 27 through March 27.  

Brooke Hansen presented "Community Solutions to the U.S. Healthcare Crisis: Applied Medical Anthropology at the Ithaca Health Alliance /Ithaca Free Clinic." Brooke’s paper was part of a panel titled “Community Colutions, Global Problems.” Brooke also visited area health clinics as a part of a special workshop run by the conference organizers.

Jack Rossen presented "Toward Native Management of Archaeology and Cultural Resources," which was part of a panel titled "Applied Archaeology: Methods, Findings and Pedagogy." Jack also chaired the panel. Following the conference, Jack spent several days speaking with archaeologists and Mayans about their perceptions of cultural resources, the national park system of ruins, tourism, and the narrowing access to sites that Native people have for ritual activities. One of his current goals is to promote an international movement of collaboration between archaeologists and Native peoples. 
 

David Turkon presented a paper on his work with Sudanese "Lost Boys" refugees. The paper, titled "Failures and Successes in Sudanese Refugee Resettlement" was a part of a panel titled "Refugee Resettlement, Asylum, and Political Integration," which David chaired. David also was an invited panelist for a roundtable discussion titled "The First 400 Days: Assessing the Obama Administration’s HIV/AIDS Policy." David was also added as fourth author on the paper "Small Plots, Big Hopes: Using Urban Gardens to Fight Food Insecurity in Lesotho," which was a part of a panel titled "Urban Gardens, Food Insecurity, and Health." Lead authors on that paper were Charlotte Noble, David Himmelgreen and Nancy Romero-Daza, all from the University of South Florida.
