The Division of Interdisciplinary and International Studies (DIIS) and the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity (CSCRE) are proud to announce that Paula Ioanide has been named the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Fellow for the 2010-2011 year.

The AAUW provides one of the largest sources of funding for graduate women and the fellowships are highly competitive. Prof. Ioanide was awarded the AAUW Publication Grant to facilitate the completion of her book project, The Affective Structures of Whiteness: Gendered Racism and Ethical Witnessing in the Post-Civil Rights Era. In the book, Ioanide examines how public feelings and fantasies about race and sexuality shape contemporary political realities in the U.S. She investigates politicized sites where dominant public feelings and fantasies about different racial groups are linked to social issues such as crime, welfare, immigration and terrorism. Ioanide demonstrates that public feelings and fantasies can become more "real" than the facts and evidence that ground such social issues. She explores ways to dislodge public feelings and fantasies that reinforce structures of inequality along the axes of race and gender.
