Between April 20-24, 2010, the College Sport Research Institute Conference held on the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill campus was the destination of choice for a group of 10 students and Dr. Staurowsky.   While at the Conference, students had an opportunity to attend sessions, compete in a case study competition, and meet scholars and students from around the country.

Ithaca was well represented in the conference program. Senior sociology major Kiera Duckworth presented a paper entitled “Intercollegiate Athletes’ Attitudes Towards and Perceptions About Sexual Minorities” with Dr. Staurowsky.  Sport management graduate students, Kelley Hubbell and Sue Christianson, also presented with Dr. Staurowsky on a project entitled “Of Orange Pride and Prejudice: An Examination of Host/Hostess Groups in College Recruiting.”

Working with a graduate student from Ohio University, Packy Moran, Dr. Staurowsky presented a paper on the record of Title IX compliance among colleges and universities in the state of Ohio entitled “New Signs, Same View – Two More Years Traveling on the Ohio Title IX Highway”. The final paper Dr. Staurowsky presented with Dr. Jason Lanter of Kutztown University was entitled “Going Big Time: Binghamton University and the Quest for Division I Basketball Glory.”

While some students were presenting and participating in the case study competition (see earlier post in Kudos on how our team did), three sport media majors, Chris Lotsbom ’13, Mark Magowan ’12, and Matt Tracy ’13 were covering the event as bloggers.

Despite a packed program, students did have an opportunity to tour the UNC-Chapel Hill campus thanks to the generosity of Ithaca graduate, John Brunner.

We wish to thank the Department of Sport Management and Media, Department of Sociology, School of Health Sciences & Human Performance, Graduate and Professional Studies Office, and Morgan Swanhart and his staff in Grounds and Transportation for assisting with funding and support for this trip.
