Longtime School of Music professor Steven Mauk has been named as the school’s acting dean, effective June 1. Mauk will serve in that role while dean Greg Woodward serves as interim provost. Woodward was appointed following the announcement by Kathleen Rountree that she would be stepping down as provost.

“Professor Mauk is nationally known as a leader in his field and is one of college’s most well-respected citizens, teachers and performers,” said Rountree. “His long service at Ithaca gives him a broad, well-informed perspective from which to lead the school, and his appointment comes with the enthusiastic endorsement of the faculty and staff as well as Dean Woodward.”

A professor of saxophone, Mauk has taught in the School of Music since 1975 and has served as chair of both graduate programs in music and the Department of Performance Studies. He has served as the faculty trustee on the Ithaca College Board of Trustees and as the faculty representative to the All-College Budget Committee, and been a member of the Planning and Priorities Committee. His honors from Ithaca College include a Dana Teaching Fellowship, Dana Research Fellowship, President’s Recognition Award and Excellence in Teaching Award. He was the recipient of the 1995–98 National Artist Award from the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

Mauk remains a very active performer and master teacher both in the U.S. and abroad. His publications include 19 recordings, over 100 articles and four books. He is a founding member of the Empire Saxophone Quartet, Troica, Remeleixo and Tango de Cámara. A member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, he has served as the organization’s president and director of scholarly publications. He holds doctoral and master’s degrees from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee.
