Integrating service learning/community work into a course? We can help make the experience more effective!Contributed by Karryn Olson-Ramanujan on 05/20/10 Instructors teaching Spring 2011 classes with a community engagement component are invited to include, in the early weeks of the course, a set of learning experiences created and run by experienced IC faculty and community leaders as part of a pilot project funded by the Partnerships for Sustainability Education to help students develop cultural and community competency related to doing this kind of work.
The sessions will be offered either in one 6-hr or two 3-hour modules in the early part of Spring 2011. We will help instructors choose the modular format that works best for their course. This is a pilot project designed to help educate students about how best to work respectfully and effectively with community organizations serving low-income residents and communities of color. Your possible interest and input AT THIS TIME will help us take into account varying faculty needs when designing the modules this summer and fall. Interested faculty please contact Elan Shapiro at eshapiro@ithaca.edu or call him at 275-0249 or 592-8402. |
