With the warm, sunny days of summer finally here, many people spend more time outdoors but may skip a few important steps to be safe. Keep these reminders nearby to have fun in the sun and be safer at the same time.

Skin protection is essential! Use a sunscreen that has both UVA and UVB protection. The bottle should include the words “broad spectrum sunscreen” or ingredients including zinc oxide, titanium oxide and avobenzene. Apply a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 or higher, between 20 and 30 minutes before going outdoors so it can soak into your skin.

Sunscreen isn’t your only defense against the sun’s harmful rays. Clothes can be a great tool for protection, such as wearing a wide-brimmed hat or long sleeves. Wrap-around sunglasses also help shield eyes from the sun.  Beach umbrellas and shade provided by trees also provide some protection.
