Choosing to make small “upgrades” in your diet can have positive effects when it comes to your wellness. When considering your diet, make “upgrades” by making more conscientious choices whenever possible. Samarra Mbenga, Leader of the Weight Watchers at Work program here at I.C., “upgraded” a common recipe for a Bacon and Turkey Club sandwich and provided comments on why the changes were "upgrades". See if any of her “upgrades” and comments give you ideas on incorporating changes into your meal choices without sacrificing flavor!

From:
Roll
3 slices of bacon
Turkey
Cheese
Lettuce and Tomato
Mayo

To:
2 slices 100% whole wheat grain flaxseed bread
3 slices Canadian bacon
Fat free Turkey
1 “Laughing Cow” cheese wedge
Avocado/tomato
Mustard / tsp. Olive Oil

"The key to being able to sustain healthy eating is making sure that you aren't sacrificing the taste. It is best to choose whole grains whenever possible. They are packed with nutrients including fiber. With both the Canadian or Turkey bacon and the turkey, you can select the reduced fat options. The cheese wedge is easy, spreadable, lower in fat and delicious. You can't go wrong with any of your favorite vegetables but adding an avocado to your meal provides lots of benefits for your body including protection from cholesterol-related heart diseases. Mustard is lower in fat and a little bit of oil contains Vitamin E and essential fatty acids that may help lower risk for heart disease and stroke."      -Samarra Mbenga

Enjoy!
