The eighth annual "Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen" film series will begin on Wednesday, August 25, with a showing of Gay Pioneers.  Gay Pioneers is the story of the first organized annual gay civil rights demonstrations held in Philadelphia, New York and Washington DC from 1965-1969.  The screening will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Textor 103.

Sponsored by the Ithaca College Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Education, Outreach, and Services, the film series this year will explore the theme of "History and Heroes of the LGBT Movement."

The series will present a total of six films during the fall semester. Additional screenings will take place during the spring. All are free and open to the public. All showings begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be held in Textor 103.

Wednesday, September 1: Double Feature
7:00 p.m.: Overruled
The courtroom drama behind the case that led the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down all remaining state sodomy laws in 2003 and launch a new era in the LGBT rights movement.
AND
7:30 p.m.: One Wedding and A Revolution
A behind the scenes look at San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom’s decision to allow lesbian and gay couples to get married in 2004.

Laramie Inside Out
In October 1998, Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard was brutally beaten and left to die.  The horror of this murder pushed Laramie, Wyoming into the media spotlight and sparked a nationwide debate about homophobia, gay-bashing, and hate crimes.

Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton’s Cafeteria

The little-known story of the first act of collective, violent resistance to the social oppression of LGBT people in the US – a 1966 riot in San Francisco’s Tenderloing neighborhood, three years before the famous riot at New York’s Stonewall Inn.

Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt

In Commemoration of World AIDS Day
In the 1970’s, a mysterious new disease began infecting and killing gay men.  Common Threads tells the powerful story of the first decade of the AIDS epidemic, and the vibrant protest movement that was born as a result.
