Observing the Sky from the Stratosphere: First Light with SOFIA/FORCAST With Joe Adams of Cornell University SOFIA achieved first light with the FORCAST infrared camera on May 25, 2010. The primary goal of the first light flight was to characterize and optimize the in-flight performance of SOFIA's telescope. Additionally, two flight legs were dedicated to observing science objects in order to demonstrate the infrared capabilities of SOFIA. The performance of the telescope and FORCAST met or exceeded expectations. I will discuss the results of the first flight and plans for upcoming science flights. All seminars will be held in CNS 204 at 12:10 (unless otherwise indicated). Pizza and refreshments will be available for $1. Remember to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - Please bring your own cup. Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact the Physics Department at jackerman@ithaca.edu. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible.
