The Department of Speech Communications to Perform "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail (Act I)" by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. LeeContributed by Hillary Barrett on 09/20/10 The Department of Speech Communication will present a public performance of "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail (Act I)" by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, on Thursday, September 30 from 8:00 p.m. until 9:15 in the Clark Lounge in the Campus Center. The performance is produced by the students and faculty in the course, "Group Performance of Literature." Admission is free and all are welcome. The play dramatizes the events leading up to Thoreau's short imprisonment for refusal to pay the poll tax and his writing of the famous essay "Civil Disobedience." Come see Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and other real and imagined characters act out this important moment in American intellectual life and politics! Professor, Bruce Henderson
