A new book by Associate Professor of Music, Timothy A. Johnson, has been accepted for publication by Ashgate Publishing.

John Adams's Nixon in China: Musical Analysis, Historical and Political Perspectives is expected to appear in late 2011. This book takes an interdisciplinary approach, rooted in musical analysis, to John Adams opera, one of the most frequently performed operas in the contemporary literature, which will receive its Metropolitan Opera premier performance in February.

This will be Professor Johnson's third book, each of which takes an interdisciplinary approach to music (mathematics and music; baseball and music; and now history, politics, culture, and music). This book projects to be the first monograph on John Adams's music and the first book on a single piece by this composer. The book follows other "firsts": Johnson's dissertation (1991) was the first on Adams's music, and Johnson's article in the Journal of Music Theory (1993) was the first scholarly publication on Adams's music.
