The Dept. of Art History is organizing a field trip to New York City. We'll be leaving at 8 AM on the morning of Friday, October 22nd, and returning the evening of Sunday, October 24th, 2010.
Here are some of the NYC trip highlights that have been planned:
1. High Line Walking Tour
We will conduct a walking tour of the High Line, which was originally built in the 1930s, to serve freight traffic. The Friends of the High Line have worked with the City of New York to preserve the elevated structure, and it was opened in June 2009 as a public park. The High Line fuses concepts of architectural design, public art, and urban planning. We will also visit the Chelsea Market, a prominent example of the urban revitalization of a 19th-century industrial complex.
2. Contemporary Art Galleries in Chelsea
We will visit a range of galleries from “blue-chip” galleries such as Mathew Marks that sell artworks by established artists to others such as Murray Guy and Nicolas Robinson that sell and promote the work of rising artists.
3. Gitterman Gallery
Located on East 75th Street, we will visit the Gitterman Gallery, owned and run by department alum, Tom Gitterman ('90). He has generously agreed to host our group on Saturday morning. He will share with us the expertise and insight he has gained in building a very successful gallery business, and draw connections between his education at Ithaca College and the skills necessary to developing a career in the gallery world.
4. Art and Architecture Studios
Studio visits will allow us to view the businesses of art and architectural design through the lens of the creative process, and explore the pathways from original inspiration to finished commodity. We will visit the studio of William T. Williams, a major abstract artist and founder of the Studio Museum of Harlem's Artist Residency Program, and the studio of Saya Woolfalk. We will also visit the Metropolitan Exchange (MEx) an innovative architecture, urban planning, and research cooperative located in Brooklyn.
5. Metropolitan Museum of Art
We will visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art and experience works closely related to classes we're offering this year. Faculty members will accompany students through galleries relevant to their expertise, including the European galleries, which range from Ancient Greek and Roman art through works by Monet, Picasso, and van Gogh. We will also have a chance to see some of the special exhibitions on display at the Met, including "Miró: The Dutch Interiors," co-organized by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
6. Other
We will also have the opportunity to visit other prominent New York museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), which offers free admission on Friday evening.
The price of the trip is only $100 (nonrefundable), and includes 2 nights accommodation, a chartered Swarthout Bus to New York, admission to the Met, and a MetroCard for getting around the city. We also hope to provide lunch for everyone on Friday at the Chelsea Market.
